CURRENT EXHIBIT:
“Chicago Fashion Through a Chicago Lens” at NoMI Gallery
In Partnership with The Curio and Chicago Fashion Week
For as long as creative advertising has existed, there has been a tension between commercial photography and fine art. Fashion photography is no exception. The process of creating fashion photography requires a unique collaboration between photographer and designer, and perhaps it is for that reason that fashion photography has historically lived on the very edge of that tension.
It is the fashion photographer’s intention to bring the designer’s vision to life in a unique way and establish an image that resonates with the viewer. This exhibit showcases five Chicago-based photographers and the unique approach each has taken in creating images for the fashion designers they represent—some more traditional, and others more contemporary. No longer is fashion imagery limited to the glossy pages of marquis magazines. The explosion of digital content and the ways in which audiences consume it has forever changed the fashion and photography industries. It is, therefore, essential for photographers to find a creative style that stands out amid the clutter of today’s dynamic fashion environment.
While the five photographers exhibited here do not aim to encompass the full range of creative voices found in fashion today, they certainly underscore the unique position where fashion photography has historically lived—and continues to live—at the intersection of commercial and fine art.
